O’DRISCOLL COLLECTIVE: CALL-OUT FOR DANCE ARTISTS – Crabs in a Barrel
Jamaal O’Driscoll seeks three dancers to join him in Birmingham for the Research & Development phase of his latest commission Crabs in a Barrel (working title).
“When you’re willing to just do something because ‘that’s what men do’, even though it doesn’t really make sense to you – that’s toxic to me.” CJ Webley, co-Artistic Director of Light Post Theatre Company, interviewed February 2021.
Exploring themes of toxic masculinity, stereotypes and disruption – Crabs in a Barrel builds on the success of Jamaal’s previous work ONE% (Birmingham Weekender 2019, Breakin’ Convention 2020) and will be his first 40-minute piece.
The R&D will take place this summer, followed by a creation period in the autumn leading to the premiere in March 2022.

THE BRIEF
Jamaal O’Driscoll seeks three dancers to join him in Birmingham for an R&D of his latest commission. He is looking for performers from any dance specialism, who are comfortable with floorwork and are open to learning Breakin' techniques. There is an expectation that at least two of the selected dancers will be male or male-identifying.
Jamaal will hold a half-day workshop on Saturday 22 May giving insight into his creative process, sharing his movement style, and discussing the topics of the piece. The workshop is a chance to get to know each other and explore movement ideas in a relaxed environment. We can offer £25 to cover expenses and food for attending the workshop.
If selected, dancers will be paid a minimum of £500 per week to take part in the R&D and subsequent creation process.
We do not require a minimum of three years professional performance experience, or formal dance training. Dancers must simply be confident movers who are willing to play an active role in the creative process. Dancers must be aged 18+ with the right to work in the UK.
We actively encourage submissions from artists of diverse backgrounds with different skills, perspectives and stories. We are particularly keen to receive proposals that reflect a broad range of experiences across age, class, disability, gender, race and sexual orientation.
