DISRUPTION

Why Disruption? The initial idea for Disruption came about in response to the resurgence of the Black Lives Mater (BLM) movement in May 2020. The public lynching of George Floyd brought black struggles and the fight for equality and justice into the spotlight. Though the prominence of BLM has disrupted global consciousness and has been the catalyst for a number of positive changes, the repeated trauma of seeing black people suffering (whether on social media, the news or other outlets) over and over again can have a negative impact on black mental health and throws into question what it means to be black in today’s society. Disruption therefore came about as an artistic response to these issues, creating a safe space to make sense of current events through a range of creative approaches.

OUR VOICES PROJECT

AMP Voices is the first multi-disciplinary exhibition by Disruption (part of O’Driscoll Collective). Exploring the rawness and expressive nature of Breakin’ and spoken word, presented alongside unique photography & videography that captures the energy and spirit of street culture – AMP Voices seeks to reflect the make-up of modern society through a range of mediums and allow those who have been ‘othered’ to see themselves represented in new spaces.

AMP Voices is the culmination of research with local people in Derby and across the Midlands, tackling themes of toxic masculinity across genders, accountability, success, and identity. From digital projection to audio installations, experimental film to photography - this interactive exhibition seeks to disrupt daily consciousness to draw in the viewer as co-author and witness.

This exhibition was be placed in the Extra Gallery space from 19 March - 3 July 2022 and showcased a a short performance on the 18 March 2022.
