INDOOR AND OUTDOOR HIP-HOP THEATRE

One%

Jamaal was successfully commissioned by Dance Hub, to choreograph his outdoor performance piece 'One%' for Birmingham Weekender 2019.

'One%' is a 14 minute dance performance for adult and family audiences featuring the dynamic rawness of breakin’. It explores how two characters move in different emotional states and how the form of B-boying/Breakin’ shifts accordingly and cultivates a synergy. Performed with b-boy Marius Mates.

One% is a sequel of Jamaal O’Driscoll’s recent solo piece “Simplicity” focusing on the significance of the need for mental health awareness. Both Simplicity and One% use this poignant topic to convey a message of emotion, intensity and despair found within mental health through movement and music.

Simplicity

'Simplicity', choreographed  in the hip-hop style of breakin', was showcased in the B-Side Hip Hop Festival at the Patrick Centre, Birmingham, Artists 4 Artists Scratch Dat Night, Rich Mix, London and Dance2Connect, Dublin.

The direction and creation of this piece is built around how mental health plays a part in dance, the mind and society. The performance focuses on breaking down the style of dance to its foundations and rebuilding it in simplistic movement for the audience to see the process, alongside a visual video. Choreographically, this concept highlights how when the movement is broken down into elements it appears simple, but when collided together it forms a more complex, dynamic intensity, symbolising thoughts and emotions.

The piece is produced and performed in loving memory of my Father, Jake O’Driscoll, who passed away in 2018.
